Scientific Benefits of Art in Health and Care Settings

Many studies and Government initiatives are now indicating the benefits of art in Health and Care Industry settings (NSW Health and the Arts Framework, 2016).

Artworks and paintings, particularly those involving natural landscapes and positive subject matters, have been found to have a beneficial impact on patients, visitors and staff in hospitals and healthcare environments. Research has found benefits including higher patient satisfaction, improved pain tolerance, reduced anxiety and improved overall health outcomes (Reddy, 2019; Nielsen et al. 2017; Nanda et al. 2011; de Tommaso et al. 2008).

The presence of art can create an environment which feels more interesting and calming for patients, their loved ones and staff members. Art can also act as a welcome distraction from challenging experiences, at the same time offering a source of inspiration, hope or point of connection for people using services. Meaningful and remarkable art can also act as a point of difference for organisations and clients using Health and Care services.
